Anxiety is our body’s natural response to stress. It can be triggered by a wide range of events or challenges we may face in our lives. It can cause feelings of fear and nervousness that can impact our mental wellbeing, especially if they persist for longer than 6 months. Here are some tips for battling anxiety that can help you manage it.
Start practicing mindfulness
Mindfulness is a practice that utilises breathing exercises to create a sense of presence. It encourages people to feel in tune with their bodies, and be more aware of their feelings, emotions and bodily sensations. This can be achieved through using mindful breathing techniques, yoga or meditation, to name a few.
The more present you are within yourself, the more you are aware of your emotions and feelings. Doing so may make you feel more able to address and manage your emotions. This in turn lower feelings of anxiety. Some people even take it a step further and practice hypnosis for relaxation, which can be an even more intense form of mindfulness and relaxation.
Invest in some CBD
CBD or Cannabidiol, is a plant extract from the cannabis plant. It comes from its hemp form, which contains an extremely small amount of the psychoactive chemical THC. THC is known for producing a high.
CBD is widely supported as an effective natural remedy for anxiety as it can help users feel more calm. It also encourages the production of serotonin in the brain. It can be taken as an oil, gummy, or through a vape to help with anxiety.
Talk to a loved one
Worries are always worse in our minds. Bottling up anxious feelings and thoughts often allows them to fester and grow bigger in our minds. This can be detrimental to our mental health. Speaking to a loved one and expressing your fears and worries can be a huge relief if you suffer from anxiety, as your loved one can help to soothe and reassure you.
Leaning on your support system can help greatly with minimising feelings of anxiety, especially if they are socially-related.
Do some exercise
Exercise serves particularly well as a way to ‘get out of your head’. Getting your body moving can release some physical tension that anxiety can cause. It can also help produce endorphins in the brain that will make you feel boosted and more positive.
Working out a regular exercise routine, in whatever form you choose, gives a sense of stability and can help you to relax a little more. You could try running, swimming, walking or yoga to help you combat feelings of anxiety and stress.
Start going to therapy
If the lifestyle changes listed above aren’t enough to help you feel less anxious, it may be best to seek professional help. A specially trained therapist can use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to help you develop and practice different thought processes related to anxiety. This can help avoid negative thinking patterns and spiralling.
Sometimes, feelings of anxiety can be triggered by self-destructive beliefs that directly affect their behaviour and mental health. Therapy can be used to unlearn these negative ways of thinking, and replace them with positive, healthier ones.
