I don’t know about you, but I have a constantly interchangeable mental list of my top travel destinations. It’s at this time of year when I start dreaming about where in the world I’d most like to spend some time. These dreams usually involve me travelling in style by private jet charter and being completely pampered!
So, with Summer 2019 just having got officially underway, here are my current top travel destinations!
Greece
Greece is my absolute destination of choice right now and the one I’m hoping will be my honeymoon destination next year. There’s such rich history and beauty in Greece that I’m going to have to individually go through the various parts of the country that fascinate me the most.
Rhodes
Greece is a nation of islands, and there are too many incredible ones to name. There are several island groups, and Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands. Like much of Greece, it has plenty of beautiful beaches you can relax on in the warm weather. But Rhodes also has beautiful wooded areas for people who want to be more active. And there’s a great nightlife in Rhodes Town. Plus, of course, there’s lots of history to observe too, which is right up my alley as I’m a huge history buff.
Santorini
The island of Santorini is the largest in an archipelago of the same name. You are probably familiar with its white buildings and blue domes, perched on cliffs 300m above the sea. It’s one of the most recognizable places in Greece, and one I would love to see for myself. Just looking at the formation of the island is incredible. It hugs a huge crater caused by one of the largest volcanic eruptions to have ever occurred. History buffs will love the Archaeological Museum. Or they might like the Volcan Wine Museum if they enjoy wine too. One of the best things to do has to be to sail around Santorini.
Crete
Crete is one of the most popular islands for vacations in Greece. It has varied terrain, so you can do everything from climbing a mountain to relaxing on the beach. It’s an excellent place for a family trip but perfect for couples, friends or even single people too. You can find another Archaeological Museum there too. Greece is a paradise for history lovers, so you can split your time between learning and doing nothing on the beach.
Athens
I’m absolutely fascinated by Greece’s capital of Athens. It might be on the mainland, but it’s still just as incredible as any of the islands. It’s where you can find the Acropolis and its museum, and the Daphni Monastery. Athens also has a great nightlife, with restaurants, bars, and clubs that I can’t wait to explore!
Sicily
Sicily is currently second on my list because I watched a great documentary last week that totally captivated me. I was all too aware of Sicily’s unfortunate association with the Italian mafia. However, I had never appreciated how gorgeous the island is and how steeped in culture its people are. So much so that the negative connotation is incomparable with the beauty it has to offer.
With over 3000 years of history, not counting its archaic origins in Greco-Roman mythology and among that of other cultures that visited or occupied the area, Sicily remains one of the most preferred destinations for tourists worldwide. It was so renowned in the ancient world that it earned the term ‘Jewel of the Mediterranean,’ thanks to its beautiful beaches and natural habitats. It’s known historically also as the ‘Gateway’to the Mediterranean’ as it was invaded or occupied by the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Spanish, North Africans and Northern Europeans, well through the Renaissance Period. This melting pot of cultures and identities has formed Sicily into a wonderful place to visit.
The Bahamas
I’m obviously, as most are, drawn to The Bahamas’ beautiful beaches, but that’s not all that the islands have to offer. There are incredible botanical gardens and conservation centres I’d love to explore, and boat trips I’d love to take around the different islands.
That’s not to say, however, that I don’t want to lounge on the beach, swim to my heart’s content, and eat delicious food! The Bahamas is located in the Atlantic Ocean between Miami and Cuba, so not too far away at all if you are Stateside. The scenery is stunning and if you’re after a tropical beach holiday, this place is simply perfect.
