In 1950 with 2600 patients, more than ten times the number it was intended to house. Due to overcrowding the windows of the hospital were covered with grime, darkening & further chilling the rooms. The wallpaper was peeling and decaying and torn by the patients. Walter Freeman the famous surgeon and lobotomy advocate started experimenting lobotomies in the hospital.
Freeman performed many lobotomies, which led healthy patients with lasting physical and cognitive damage. His methods include slipping a pointed rod like an ice pick into the patient’s eyes with the help of a hammer to force it to sever the connective tissue in the brain’s prefrontal cortex, which led to a number of deaths.
