Visiting new and exotic locations around the world is what travelling is all about. It’s a chance to soak up a different culture and learn more about yourself. While you’re away and exploring, you understandably want to look good. But when packing for a trip, it can be difficult to know exactly what to take with you. Especially when it’s cold at home and you’re getting out of Blighty for some winter sun! What you need are some decent holiday fashion tips!

Winter sun holidays are more popular than ever. The benefits are pretty endless in my opinion. It’s cold and damp at home and there’s no end to it in sight. So whether you’re a one nice holiday a year girl or you prefer a few smaller trips, having a winter break in sunnier climes is ideal. And, of course, getting away during our winter is always much more cost effective than doing it during our summer.

What to Take

Knowing what clothes to take isn’t easy. It really depends of course on where you’re going and it’s always a good idea to do your research on what the weather is going to be like before you pack. The weather could be a complete mix bag. I’m a US expat and am from Texas, so I get this more than most. Texas has a huge influx during winter of what we call ‘Winter Texans’. These are people who live in parts of the US that have harsh winters and want to spend the coldest months in a warmer, but not too warm, climate. The thing is, much of Texas was built in the desert, so it can be 25 degrees or 5 degrees, depending on the day!

I won’t digress any further, at least for now, because once I start talking about Texas I usually don’t stop!

What I really get excited about during winter, especially when I’m getting ready to go away somewhere, is accessories. Anyone who meets me instantly knows that accessories are my thing. I love shopping for bits and pieces to wear and carry, especially before I go away. I just love to try out different looks when I’m fully relaxed and away from the strain of work, home, paying bills etc.

Comfort is just as important as style, especially as most winter sun breaks involve a fair bit of travel.  So to make your travels even better, here are some of my must-have holiday fashion tips.

Take a Good Handbag

When you’re out and about, wherever you are, a good handbag is essential. Trust me, you don’t want to have your personal items in different places. I’ve had a couple of bad experiences where my handbag has been either so small that I can’t fit essentials like my mobile phone or camera, or so big that trying to find anything in it is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

The type and size of handbag you prefer are subjective, of course. But it’s good to know what type of personality you have when it comes to your own personal organisation and how much stuff you like to carry buy in tune with that

What I can definitely say is that going away somewhere is a great time to try out a new handbag. A new handbag to me is like a personal makeover – I actually feel new when I head out with one and it makes me feel so good about myself! And wherever and with whoever you are, there’s never a bad time to have a stylish handbag on your arm!

Don’t forget about the accessories

Even though you may want to pack light, it doesn’t mean that you have to leave the accessories behind. You can pack light and still make sure that you are looking your best and that you have the right accessories for your outfits. One thing you can consider is investing in an Apple Watch. Apple watches are perfect for travelling as well because you can always have your phone and messages to hand, which is good for safety when you are visiting new cities or countries. Practical reasons aside, Apple watches are the perfect travel accessory as they have interchangeable straps which make it that much easier to make sure to swap out your straps to match your outfits. I like WsC London because of the variety ranging from leather, stainless steel, woven nylon, and silicone bands.

Have some modest clothing options

Regardless of where you are travelling to in the world, it’s always good to have some more modest clothing choices. Shorts and a bikini top will not always be appropriate attire and could bring you negative attention. You will discover that the local women in some places will dress in long skirts, trousers and long sleeved tops so as not to be too revealing.

Even in Western countries, you will probably find that you can’t enter certain venues if you are not appropriately dressed. So make sure you have some modest clothing items with you, to be respectful and to avoid embarrassment. If you aren’t sure what clothing would be appropriate,  do some research to get you on the right track.

Always pack a large scarf

Scarves are an accessory that most fashionistas won’t leave home without and they can be highly useful when travelling. They can protect you from the sun, cover up your hair when necessary and keep you warm on cold flights. They can also instantly transform any travel outfit by introducing a print or colour. Plus they are lightweight and take up little room. The list of benefits they bring goes on and on.

When choosing which scarf to bring, choose a colour or design that will work with multiple items in your travel wardrobe. Also, practise different scarf styling ideas so you don’t get tired of your look too quickly.

Take versatile shoes

Comfortable shoes are an absolute must when travelling. You’ll be doing lots of walking around tourist attractions, airports and city centres. The last thing you want is your trip to be spoiled by bad footwear choices. Flat shoes are always far more comfortable than heels so opt for ballet flats or plimsolls that feel amazing to wear. Think about how versatile they are and if you can dress them up or down.

Again, determine how well the style and colour will work with the rest of your clothing. This will guarantee that you have shoes that can be worn for a multitude of different occasions and still look good.

I hope these holiday fashion tips should make preparing and packing for your trip much easier and help you enjoy your trip far more. They’ve worked pretty well for me. Whatever you decide to take with you, make sure it’s suitable for your destination and makes you feel good about yourself. That way you can enjoy your travels to the fullest!
