What to do in the run-up to Christmas in Bolton

I love the North West of England. It’s been my home away from home and I have such a sweet spot for it. One of the places that I really enjoyed was Bolton. That being said, with Christmas rapidly approaching there’s no better time to start planning what to do. There are festive events all around Bolton and if you don’t make a plan of attack now you’ll lose out to the crowds.

If you’re living in student accommodation Bolton has plenty of events starting earlier in the season so you can get your dose of festive fun with university friends before you head home to your family at the end of term.

Christmas Light Switch On

A great way to kick off the celebrations is the Christmas Lights switch on in Bolton Town centre on the 16th of November. The events are centred on Newport Street and start at half past five but there’s entertainment to enjoy for the rest of the evening and the fireworks will be visible wherever you are!

That only marks the beginning of the festive plans Bolton has in store. Their Winter Festival takes over the town centre throughout the season, and there are two particular treats for families that are worth pointing out. From the 2nd of December, a family ice rink will be open on Victoria Square, so people of all ages can enjoy some ice skating in between Christmas shopping trips.

Family Events

More excitingly though, Newport Street is hosting a giant ice slide! It’s a thrilling 55-metre artificial slide for children and brave adults who fancy a festive adventure.

There’s plenty more to cater for families this Christmas in Bolton, with a traditional nativity scene, and, perhaps more likely to get your children excited for the festive season, a chance to meet Father Christmas in his grotto!

Christmas Markets

For some additional festive shopping and eating opportunities there’ll be Christmas Markets in town every weekend in December, so you can pick up some extra gifts, as well as one-off decorations and special treats for the family as well. If you just want to settle back with some mulled mine or hot cider and drink in the festive atmosphere that’s an option as well. You can also restore your energy with food from the hog roast while you enjoy the carol singers. Bolton’s Winter Wonderland is going from strength to strength and this year really is the best yet.

These are just a few of the events on offer throughout November and December so make sure you keep your ear to the ground for more Christmas fun as the season continues!
